Glossary of Words

 

Certified First Responder (CFR) -- Administers emergency medical care to patients of medical emergencies, such as heart attacks, strokes and automobile accidents; provides the necessary life-saving treatment until the ambulance arrives with more highly trained personnel; administers defibrillation when medically necessary.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Basic -- Administers emergency medical care to patients of medical emergencies, such as heart attacks, strokes and automobile accidents; provides necessary life-saving treatment; transports patients to the hospital; administers defibrillation when medically necessary.

Emergency Medical Technician (Intermediate) -- Administers emergency medical care to patients of medical emergencies, such as heart attacks, strokes and automobile accidents; provides advanced life support care involving skills such as intravenous fluid resuscitation, advanced airway-management techniques (EOA, ET), and defibrillation; transports patients to the hospital.

Emergency Medical Technician (Critical Care) -- Administers emergency medical care to patients of medical emergencies, such as heart attacks, strokes and automobile accidents; provides advanced life support care involving skills-management techniques (advanced airway management techniques), ECG monitoring and interpretation, medication administration, defibrillation; transports patients to the hospital.

Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic) -- Administers emergency medical care to patients of medical emergencies, such as heart attacks, strokes and automobile accidents; provides advanced life support care involving skills-management technicians (advanced airway-management techniques), ECG monitoring and interpretation, medication administration, defibrillation; transports patients to the hospital. Competent in the use of cardiac monitor/defibrillation and IV drugs and fluids. The Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic) is the highest level of pre-hospital certification.
